Oliva Henkel, anthropologist, marine biology activist and cofounder of the Loisachbündnis, was born on the banks of the Partnach in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in the Loisach Valley. She grew up surrounded by wild nature and cold mountain streams in the Bavarian Alps and loves water as her element. As an anthropologist, she worked on well construction projects in West Africa for the German Development Service, where she experienced first-hand the importance of access to clean water for everyone. In Belize, Central America, she increasingly focused on marine biology, carrying out mangrove replanting and developing strategies to prevent overfishing on the Belize Barrier Reef. She is currently involved in setting up a database on whales and dolphins with the Blue World Institute in Croatia, with the aim of creating new conservation areas in the Adriatic. She lives in Murnau and works with the Loisachbündnis.
