Reva is a wetland area located within the territory of the city of Belgrade, specifically in the floodplain of the Danube River. This area is ecologically significant due to its natural processes, just like all other wetland habitats, and is therefore no less important. It boasts rich biodiversity, with as many as 130 species of birds, an abundance of medicinal plants, large and small mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and insects.
Nevertheless, its future remains uncertain, as city development plans have condemned it to destruction, urbanization, and industrialization. Citizens managed to halt further construction work in 2021 and have remained vigilant ever since. However, it is now crucial that Reva receives the official status of a protected area, which it rightfully deserves, and that is why all forms of support are essential.
Belgrade is the only European capital without a wastewater treatment plant, meaning that a large portion of polluted water ends up in the Reva, which puts additional strain on the area. Although ecosystems like this are extremely powerful in terms of water filtration, that does not justify or permit them to endure such additional pressure. There is a clear need to protect this ecosystem from further pollution.
In Serbia, wetlands are still not recognized as habitats of exceptional importance, especially within urban environments, and are often regarded as undesirable swamps or unused land. The danger of Reva being destroyed for these reasons still exists. Civic organizations are working diligently to raise awareness about the importance of these habitats. The need for public support is essential and ongoing.
No matter how much effort or how many innovative ideas are invested in educating citizens and engaging decision-makers, it seems we are going in circles — time passes, and Reva continues to suffer. Through the ethical framework of the Rights of Nature, we have come to understand the core of the problem and the urgent need for Reva to be recognized as a legal entity and subject rather than an object in law. That is why we are working in cooperation and under the guidance of the Balkan Centre for the Rights of Nature to ensure Reva’s right to be recognised and adopted. We believe this is the only true path that will allow Reva, as an entity, to have its guaranteed right to life.
